Path of Exile Item Upgrades
Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can be a good source of additional damage or more AD or even more affixes.
Sometimes, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade gear because of their requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be applied to armor and weapon items. They improve the stats of the item they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged using a specialist or higher salvage kits to retrieve upgrades from the items.
The amount of damage that an armored piece or weapon will absorb is contingent on the degree of upgrades. The absorption of damage by an item of armor will increase when it is upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. However, it's important keep in mind that this will raise its weight, requiring it to be heavier than before.
There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades available in the game and each one has distinct effects. Certain upgrades grant armor an extra number of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The name of the armor upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade that an item will be given, as illustrated below.
Some of the upgrades are also magic or a hybrid of technology and magic which is identified by an "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Certain upgrades require charges to use. Weapons
Weapon upgrades allow players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. Jewels
Jewels can be used to improve a stat or provide secondary effects in armor and weapons. The Jeweler can boost the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. The stat boosts will vary according to the tier that the jewel is at when it's slotted into jewelry, weapons, or other gear.
The Jeweler is able to create all kinds of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones, which you must be at a certain level to get. Like other upgrade components jewels are able to be swapped with another jewel of the same kind without destroying the original one. However, you can only replace one jewel in an equipment piece only once.
Utilizing more jewels in a movement will make it more smooth and is typically used to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. In addition to improving performance, the jewels create a surface that is harder than steel, so the repeated friction with pivots doesn't damage them as easily.
In addition to the above upgrades, the player can also obtain glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs provide a small boost and can be freely traded, but they're not guaranteed to show up as loot. The first trinkets a player unlocks will be the cloak, which gives a small but useful bonus to movement speed and evasion. After that, they can acquire rings, amulets, and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player obtains weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced, and can only be used with certain trinkets.
These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This allows a hero to be more efficient while inactive. It can also make up for the absence of strong team or talent tree slots that are normally filled by the hero's optimal stats.
As a rule trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace anytime soon. Also, consider items with desirable stats that are less significant than the iLevel of the item that is to be upgraded.
